Dr Sally Rodgers

Senior Lecturer: Business

Biography

Job title: Senior Lecturer: Business

Courses taught: BA (Hons) Music (Business), BA (Hons) Music (Production)

Specialisms: electronic music, hip hop, dance music and remix culture

As one half of the electronic music duo A Man Called Adam, Sally’s practice is rooted in dance music and DJ culture and she has produced a valuable catalogue of recordings (including 5 albums, plus singles and remixes) which are available worldwide on download sites such as iTunes. A Man Called Adam titles have also been licensed for many best-selling compilation series, and on major television shows and advertisements such as ‘Sex and The City’, ‘House’ Chase Manhattan, Chrysler and Kellogg’s.

With her long-term collaborator, friend and business partner Steve Jones, she’s had both major and independent record deals ranging from early works on the Acid Jazz label and the Polydor subsidiary Big Life, to the cult Chicago House label Prescription Records and Norman Cook’s Southern Fried label. Their DJing career includes residencies in the UK, Ibiza, extensive touring worldwide, and they have an industry name as remixers.

Since the mid-nineties she’s been the co-director (and ‘iron chancellor’) of her own label, Other Records Ltd, where she manages the licensing, distribution and sales of the A Man Called Adam catalogue, their sound design work – which includes commissions for BBC radio, The British Museum and the BME Liverpool – and their installation and performance projects under the name Discrete Machines.

She has an M.Litt. in Creative Writing (Poetry) and a PhD in Modern Poetics/ Music from the University of St Andrews. Her academic research considers the historical impact of recording technologies on lyric forms and she has specialist knowledge in hip hop, dance music and remix culture.

Working both collaboratively and independently, and with a flexible and inquisitive outlook Sally’s creative life exemplifies the concept of a ‘portfolio’ career. As a successful self-employed artist and businesswoman she has first hand experience, from both the artist and label perspectives, in many aspects of the music industry from performance, production, promotion, distribution and licensing. At LCoM she hopes to share her own accumulated knowledge with her students and learn new skills from them.
